About Geoff’s Workshops
Workshops are a great way to inspire and set the scene for math teachers at a school or district. Geoff’s workshops are customized for each experience based on conversations with school and district leaders. During the workshops, Geoff models best practices for teacher professional development as well as classroom-relevent routines. Drawing from Necessary Conditions‘ Effective Facilitation sections, Geoff provides protocols and scaffolds to help adult learners further their expertise.
In addition to the workshop experience itself, participants will receive a set of leave-behind cards based on Necessary Conditions. These cards have been a game-changer, breaking down large concepts into smaller, actionable next-steps. Each workshop is also accompanied by a custom website for participants. The website includes activities from the workshop as well as planning forms, additional readings, and other goodies. Teachers (or absent participants) may continue to return to the website to find resources.
The most common workshop Geoff delivers offers an overview of his book, Necessary Conditions, describing and discussing the framework of Academic Safety, Quality Tasks, and Effective Facilitation. However, each workshop is customized for the needs of the site. Geoff has particular expertise in the following areas of math instruction:
- Problem Based Learning
- Mathematical Creativity
- Fostering Math Confidence and Creativity for Elementary Teachers
- Authentic Assessment: Designing Student Mathematical Portfolios
- Academic Safety and Identity in the Math Classroom
Workshops may also be split into half-days. For example, for a district-wide PD day, you may want to have elementary teachers participate in the mornings and secondary teachers participate in the afternoons.
With tightening school budgets remote professional development may be the best option for your team as a cost-effective approach. After much virtual facilitation as a professional developer and teacher at University of Wyoming, Geoff’s preferred format is two, two-hour remote sessions on successive days (or with a day in between), given the “virtual stamina” that remote participation requires.
Geoff is adept at facilitating virtually. At New Tech Network he was responsible
for transferring the entire on-boarding experience to a virtual setting. Using the
Zoom platform, we will use the interactive features while fostering rich discussion using the breakout rooms.
